i have a fairly old computer that i had downloaded iTunes on aftr trying to clean out old useless files i was unable to use iTunes. it didnt let me open it and said that i would have to uninstall iTunes then reinstall

It sounds like there is a problem with the iTunes installation that tells you it needs to be uninstalled and re installed.
I would follow the troubleshooting in this article named Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows found http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926.
It should help you get iTunes installed successfully.
