Q: can't sign into the app store - progress wheel keeps spinning

I just bought a new iMac (with Lion - 10.8.4) and there are 2 software updates available via the app store, however, I am unable to sign-in.  It's not due to an incorrect email/password - the progress wheel just keeps spinning after I click "Accept".  I am able to launch the iTunes app and sign-in without problem using the similar looking login form... it just doesn't work with the App Store - login progress bar keeps spinning after trying to sign-in.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Most updates say Update, not Accept. Are the apps to be updated either of the iLife apps; iPhoto, iMovie or GarageBand? If so, did you not Accept the iLife apps as part of initial setup? Have you been using any of these three apps without having first accepted them?

Under "Updates", the apps listed are iPhoto and iMovie.  They each have "UPDATE" beside them and "UPDATE ALL" in the top right corner.  Whichever update button I choose I'm asked to sign into the App store but the login button does in fact say "Accept".

If I click "Purchases" which is the tab to the left of "Updates", it says I have 3 Apps tp Accept (GarageBand, iMovie, iPhoto).  And it says "To receive future updates, the bundled applications GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto will be assigned to your Apple ID.  A unique hardware identifier from your computer must be sent to Apple to verify eligibility.

It then has an "Accept" button which brings up the login form with the "Accept" button again to sign-in but once I click that (after entering my login details) it just keeps spinning.

I should mention that when I purchased the new iMac the computer store installed Basecamp for me so it has both Lion and Windows 8 options when you boot up.

OK, but the key question here is have you been using any of these three apps before this moment?

Nope, haven't used pretty much anything outside of Safari.

Sign out of the Mac App Store (store menu), quit the app, reindex your HDD with Spotlight and then start over.

Also, do you have any anti-viral software or a firewall that could be impeding the internet connection of the store with Apple's servers?

I think I may have got it resolved by going to the "Quick Links" section under Top Charts and then clicking "Account".  I logged into that form without problem.  I then returned to the Updates screen and it asked me to log in and this time it worked...!

I have this EXACT same problem with a brand new machine.  This solution did not work for me.  When I try logging in that way, I get the same problem.
