recovery disk assistant

i have downloaded recovery disc assistant on an external flash drive in order to make an external start-up disk.

My next step is to download mountain lion onto the flash drive, but when i restart the computer and select external recovery

drive from the startup menu, i cannot continue because by restarting the computer, i lose my internat connection

(which is a usb plug-in device). The apple instructions say to select a wireless network from the top right hand corner of the screen,

but all i see is the airport button--when i select it, it says wireless on, or select a network--i am with a company named "Telstra"

when i type this, it doesn't work--so obviously i've got the name wrong--or there is a trick i don't know, OR you just can't restart

your computer with a usb internet stick and still stay connected to the internet, so the whole thing has no chance of working, as

you can't see the recovery disk assistant from disk utility! Oy vey! Does someone up there want to make things tricky or what? Thanks

yes, i installed it onto a usb thumb drive (it seems impossible to download it to my applications folder, which is

where i'm trying to install it, so i can stay on the internet and not get cut off when i restart) i tried holding option +

command + r on restart, but when i do it just asks me to choose a network, and this is the place where i get stuck

because i use a usb gadget to connect to the net and of course it just cuts straight off when i restart--if you have any clues about naming this usb device as a 'network', then that may help, otherwise any advice about how to install recovery disk assistant INTERNALLY may help. i have tried to follow instructions from a similiar post, but no joy so far. thank you for replying.

You're right, the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant just runs when you dbl-click it. You have to copy the downloaded file to your /Applications folder to use it from Applications.

So, if I understand you correctly, even when you restart your Mac using COMMAND+R to get to the ML Recovery HD, you still have the same issue with no Internet connectivity?

You should be able to redownload the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant; then copy it using Finder from your ~/Downloads folder to your /Applications folder. Then you can run it anytime you want from within Mountain Lion.

As far as your network question, I'm not much help as I don't use a USB wireless network and I'm not familiar with the hardware. I know with my Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (router) I can go into its configuration and set a network name and enable SSID broadcast. This means, whenever you right click your WiFi icon in your Menu Bar to select a network to connect to the SSID of your wireless network would broadcast so you can select it and use it. Then just enter the passphrase for it if you have it secured.

thank you, eric. And thanks to lion diskmaker, i have a complete copy of os x mt ln fully installed on my flash drive. So if something goes wrong with my mtn ln on my computer, i can reinstall from this copy of the fully installed mountain lion osx system on my flash drive, yes?

if no, i still have a copy of the lion diskmaker "installESD.dmg" on my desktop and i could put THAT onto another flash drive to use to reinstall mountain lion on my hard drive if and when a problem arises if that is the clue here. [???]
