Why is this so difficult? She does not have another device with iMessage. How can she add her number so she can manage her account?
It's not difficult, it's impossible. I'll restate what I said earlier in this thread...
Since the iPad is not a phone, people can't contact you with a phone number, thus you cannot enter a phone number. It's done via an email address which is linked to your iPad on Apple's servers.
The number on your iPad 3G is for internet access only.

How does my wife add her iPad's phone number to her iMessage?
It's not possible. She will need to consult with her carrier to find another way to manage her account. Or, find a carrier who's service is designed to work with iPads. I get alerts on my iPad when I'm getting close to using up my data. iMessage is not required.

Mar 12, 2014 12:29 AM in response to Captain pugby Niel123456,It was quite simple, just go to settings, logout iMessage and log back. It sends out a SMS to verify the phone number and all is done

Mar 21, 2014 12:38 AM in response to Niel123456by Jammmmy,Hi, i am trying to get my ipad to use it's own number for imessages, it seems you have done this can you elaborate how you did it please? I have gone in to my ID account with itunes and and added the phone number there although its a bot confusing how to add a mobile phone number with the area code etc. I am assuming this is where it gets the number from. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Cheers

As has been noted at least twice in this thread, that is NOT possible. The poster to whom you are replying appears to be talking about an iPhone.

Mar 22, 2014 5:13 PM in response to Meg St._Clairby MCN613,I have closed I message on both devices and turned back on without success. My IPad use to receive the same iMessages as my phone. I just got a new iphone 5S and now they don't work together!

Dec 27, 2014 3:05 PM in response to Captain pugby tarcenicole,The short answer, if you don't have an iPhone, signup for 3rd party app. Google Voice let's you do everything without the need for imessaging and have some cool features that are not available via Apple (like reading your transcribed messages in your email). You can call and video conference with Hangouts with anyone on any phone. Just ask them to signup for Hangouts. This way you can call and chat with any phone, not just iPhones. I assume one chooses iPad for its great features, not for being restricted to communicate only with Apple devices, this isn't a "feature" you want anyway.

Sep 16, 2016 9:52 AM in response to Meg St._Clairby toriemonzon,What if my iPhone is broken and I cannot log back into it after I have logged out?

Sep 16, 2016 10:10 AM in response to toriemonzonby Meg St._Clair,Then you can't use it for iMessages and you'll just need to use your iPad.
