Why are Apps not shown in left hand panel in itunes when my ipad or iphone is synced

I recovered my hard drive from backup in windows vista and reinstalled itunes. When I sync my ipad of iphone and select apps, the screen layout is shown in the right hand panel but the apps do no show up in the left panel. Before the recovery operation the apps were found in the left panel categorised as iphone and ipad.

Now I cannot temprarily delete apps in case they are permanently deleted.

iPad, iOS 6.1.3

Hi, in the newer version of iTunes, with your device plugged in via USB, you need to click on the little icon in the top left of iTunes and select Show Menu Bar, then go to File on the grey bar, go down to Devices > and select Transfer Purchases From [your device name]. Took me a while to find it but working ok now. Hope this helps.

Great help - am running iTunes 12 and the last tip worked great .. Ta.. .. But......

I have now downloaded all my purchases from iPad into my 13" MacBook Air and its taken nearly 2G of disk space (which on the wee Air is a big problem !). I guess its transferred lots of files but apps like Adobe Draw and Sketch which I suspect have some big files do not show up down the page under the App > Files section in iTunes and many other apps are missing from here.

How can I find and delete all the files that have been sucked into my MB Air after restoring purchases. I have not chosen to backup my iPad to the Air, but who knows what iTunes has decided to do 🙂

Update : I have found the Apps menu in iTunes and deleted all Apps, wow, 3.75GB drive space back !! What does this mean ?, when you transfer purchases then it copies ALL the actual Apps into lappy hard drive and not just a tag to manage the mobile device - for what reason - Backup ?

Never really did understand iTunes, its the devil that we need 🙂 .

I re-synced my iPhone from my Mac to my PC because iTunes 12 isn't supported on my Mac with 10.6.8. Now the apps list is empty even though the apps are on the iPhone and you can see them in the window that lets you re-arrange them. I did a 'Transfer Purchases' as suggested but no luck. I then installed a new app on the iPhone and repeated in the hopes that it would kick it somehow but no luck. Doing a sync didn't work either. So any other suggestions?

The problem with this is that it's all or nothing. Unless I'm missing it, there is no way to just have the apps that are currently installed on your device show up in iTunes on the left pane. Following this "purchases link" under APPLE ID does show me the apps and allow me to download them. My choices are:

1) one at a time... very tedious and searching to match the device to iTunes

2) all of them, which defeats the reason I deleted them in the first place; for space

I'm coming to the realization that it's just a "comfort" factor for me. There is no real reason to have them on your computer in that left pane AND your device. The device is backing up everything, so they are there in the back up should I need them.

Just an annoyance I guess.

This is the solution that worked for me ..

Download Purchases

The iTunes software lets you download past purchases, which includes free and paid apps. To download past purchases, launch iTunes, go to the "iTunes Store" section on the left-hand column and click the "Purchased" link on the store's right side. Click the "Apps" tab on the next page, then click the download icon. You may have to enter your Apple ID and password if you have not already signed in with your credentials.
