Why are Apps not shown in left hand panel in itunes when my ipad or iphone is synced

I recovered my hard drive from backup in windows vista and reinstalled itunes. When I sync my ipad of iphone and select apps, the screen layout is shown in the right hand panel but the apps do no show up in the left panel. Before the recovery operation the apps were found in the left panel categorised as iphone and ipad.

Now I cannot temprarily delete apps in case they are permanently deleted.

iPad, iOS 6.1.3

I talked with Apple Support and unfortunately they only confirmed that this feature no longer exists. The support person admitted that they are receiving a lot of flak about this and suggested that I leave feedback so that resources could be allocated to solve the problem. You can leave feedback at:

Feedback - iTunes - Apple

As of the time I'm posting this message over 600 people have said they have the same question. The more noise we make about this issue the more likely Apple is going to be motivated to solve it.

Nope, not in 2017 with iTunes 12.6. None of the advice in this thread seems relevant to the current interface. I have the same problem originally stated: no list of apps on the left side although the apps are recognized in the share data table below it. Different Windows 10 computers with new installations of iTunes for Windows 10, syncing, backing up, transferring purchases--none of this works. I guess I need to make an appointment at an Apple Store and bring both both my iPad and my Windows laptop with me. User forum fail again.

You haven't read all replies, or not done as instructed. As I said above :

Apps won't be copied from a device that's on iOS 9+, you have to download them directly on your computer's iTunes

Apps won't copy back from a device that's on iOS 10, you have to download them directly on your computer's iTunes e.g. via the Account > Purchased menu option.

(iOS 9 introduced a developer 'app thinning' which allows only what is needed by a particular app on a device to be downloaded onto that device, so you may not have 'complete' apps on your phone.)

The problem with that is that I'm trying to recover an app that is no longer in the app store but is still functional on my iPad 4. Because it is not on the store it doesn't show up via Account > Purchases. I was hoping to transfer the app file from the old iPad (as I've seen demonstrated in tutorial videos) in order to install it on my new iPad Pro.

Those tutorials are now obsolete. From what you are saying, direct transfer from device to computer cannot be done anymore. The app is Autostitch, and it was pulled when the company that licensed the rights for the SIFT image matching engine, Kolor, was sold to GoPro. Ah well, It probably won't be compatible with iOS 11 anyway (sour grapes psychology).

Complete wipe and re-install preserving old data ----- I had to rename all my old data, uninstall Apple / iTunes software, down load it fresh and install with a newly created library. Logon, reauthorize my PC. Then transfer data from old to new directories and drag *.ipa, mp3 photos etc into the new library. Lot of turmoil but it worked.

Looks like Apple decided to just ditch it instead of making it useful. I would much rather sort all my apps though a computer instead of dragging around on the iPhone. Just making the iTunes app manager work like a Finder for apps would have been awesome. Should have at least had a popup explaining this change, then ask if we wanted to delete the 30GB of apps that can no longer be installed again through iTunes.
