How do I activate the voice on Google Maps on my iPhone 4S - sometimes it comes on but not always???

How do I activate the voice when using Google Maps on my Iphone 4S - sometimes it comes on automatically and other times it's only the visual map.

I had this problem when the phone was also plugged into the charger. When off the charger, it'd come through the speakers fine (car bluetooth)
