I'm trying to restore via iTunes my Apple TV (3rd Generation) to 5.3 (because it's stucked in that "connect to iTunes" screen), but whenever I try, it says either "the downloaded firmware is corrupt" (clicking the Restore button) or it displays an unknown error "14" (clicking the restore button holding the Option key to select a previosly downloaded .ipsw).
Please HELP!! I'm desperate!!

Same problem here, the Apple TV 3rd gen. has suggested an update, but despite the complete download, the process failed on the second step(progress bar) and I've got an "connect to iTune with micro USB cable" splash screen, no white LED on ATV.
I've connected the ATV unit to my "up to date for all soft" 2013 iMac, and I've got the restore Apple TV dialog. The download completes, but the update process failed with an "1611 error" warning. It seems that his error is related to virus protection software. But... I do not use any virus protection software... so I can't apply any suggested workaround to solve the problem.
I've now a dead box Apple TV.
Bad, bad move when selecting "apply update" on a pretty usable ATV.

In addition to security software, sharing software such as 'torrents etc' can also cause similar issues. Please also note that security software is not limited to anti-virus software.
Also note however in cases this error can also occur because of hardware issues, you might want to try a restore on another computer on another network.

No torrent access for me. Can you give me more details about security software involved by the download process. Remember that all my apple devices and macs are updated regulary without anyproblem.

I already tried with another computer (with no "sharing software") but it doesn't work...
As I know, iTune allows a download on desktop with Option key. I remember that my brand new apple TV was updated right out of the box in june 2013 and the process was sucessful. Can I find a direct download URL for this software version and install it?

I'm not all that well up on security software, I don't have any myself. But if you have no added security software and don't have any file sharing applications installed you may want to test on another computer/network.

Was that on another network.
Error 14 is not quite the same as 1611, they can both be caused by security software/network issues, but 14 may also indicate a USB problem.

I don't think I'm allowed to answer that question.
I tried using my iPhone as a mobile hotspot, but it didn't work.
I'm not really sure whether it should work or not through your phone, it would be better if it was tested on a standard set up.

Well, back from AppleStore with a replacement unit as even a genius was not be able to restaure my Apple TV 3.
Did you see the problem with the version 6 pulled away this week-end with the same problem?

I guess maybe I ran into the same issue this past Sunday. Ran through the downolad fine then stopped working. The light on the front of the box is blinking. After I pulled the plug and plugged back in it showed an image on the TV screen that showed that I should plug a micro USB into the Apple TV and a regulsr USB into itunes (or my computer I guess). Never did use a micro USB before for an Apple TV update.
Problem now is that with the Apple TV box being so small the slot for the HDMI and micro USB are very close and with standard cables the end plugs are too big to both fit at the same time. When I unplug the HDMI and plug in the micro USB and my laptop the nice screen image that prompted me what to do disappears. All I get in itunes is the option the reset the Apple TV. Maybe not a bad choice from what I've read about this software update. If ti allows me that is. Maybe it works now with the re-release of the update.
Any suggestions on having both cables plugged in if that's still a reqmt?
Finally got my Apple TV reset (after 3 tries) and it seems to be back to normal.
Appletv puts an image somewhere on your computer when you restore to factory settings. If the image is corrupted, you will always get the "connect to iTunes" icon after restore. If you delete the image, then you'll get a new uncorrupted one on the next restore. However, I can't find where the image is located on my PC to delete it. Any ideas?
