Making the 'Mark' hold still

Ok, I give up. When I place the 'Mark' in the timelight exactly where I want to split the clip... how to I select split without moving the mark. For reasons unfathomed, the mark doesn't have to be clicked on, or even near the mark to move it. How is this supposed to work?

Another way.. You can set the location of the split then drag and drop to the other end of the split. This can be the beginning or end of the clip or in the middle of the clip. When finished, the yellow border is around the portion you want to split. Then right-click/Split Clip.

I use this way most of the time. But I use the way thesurreyfriends recommended if I need to hold the playhead still so I can split both a video track and an attached audio track or tracks, or a video track and an attached cutaway.

Both ways should work for you.

Great. Thanks guys. I had a very tight place to cut when one person stopped talking and another began, so the cue wasn't 'visual.' I wound up using a strategy not mentioned, but accidently discovered. I played till I head the spot I wanted to split, tapped the space bar to stop it, then without moving the mouse at all, right clicked and that opened the contextual menu one of whose Items was 'split.' That is how I wound up doing it, but I've read your two suggestions and added them to my iMovie quiver of arrows. Thanks.
