Benefit to having multiple apple devices?

After much thought, I've finally decided to get a smartphone. Although I'm pretty excited, I'm also very confused! I have tried to educate myself as much as possible about the different devices that apple has- and then end up thinking, "OMG, I need an iPod, iPhone, iPad, Mac desktop, and etc....I'm beginning to think it's a cult! LOL!

Seriously though, can someone please provide me with some examples of how to use the different devices? What would be the need for lets say, an iPad if I already have an iPhone? (I'm looking for some justifiable reasons to own several cool techy toys here.) A common sense approach is what I'm looking for here. I don't want to "just buy it to have it." I want to understand why and how I could enjoy owning another expensive toy!

Our two college age sons feel like we're starting to "get with the program" when we recently bought our SMART TV! LOL!

Thanks for your help:)

No one really "needs" any of this stuff...it's all "wants". Computers are great for creating stuff, not so true with iPads. iPads are great for consuming content...better than smart phones because of the screen real estate. Smart phones are good at calls & consuming content. Boils down to "wants", not "needs". No one "needs" any of this stuff.
