iTunes on OS X 10.5.8 stopped working. e.g. no highlighted items in menus!
I can't even check which version of iTunes I have.
I tried reloading iTunes 10.6.3, but no change.
How do I fix this?

Try all the basic fixes like restarting your computer...
Restarting does not fix this problem. I have a feeling that iTunes startup sequence is getting hung up, perhaps on trying to access my iTunes library.
What do you mean by "no highlighted items in menus"?
What is the max version of iTunes in 10.5.8? Or do you have a later OS?
The last compatible build is iTunes 10.6.3. Suggest reinstalling from there.
You could test the theory regarding a problem with the library by creating a new one as a test: HT1589 - iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

Thanks for the direction. It took over 12 hours to re-built my iTunes library. The process actually duplicated all the .mp3 files! But I now have a functional version of iTunes.
