i have been researching the internet and people tell me its a common problem, and to fix it all i have to do is uninstall and reinstall itunes. can anyone tell me if this solution is correct, and if so how to uninstall and reinstall itunes. Im also worried it may just be computer malfunction caused from my very old macbook.

What do you mean by "won't connect"? Also, I wouldn't recommend uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it if you don't know what you're doing.
It won't connect as in iTunes won't register it's there. When I plug it in it charges fine, but iTunes doesn't work. I'm not exactly sure of the problem which is why I think uninstalling and reinstalling will help. If it doesn't make sense for me to do it do you know if the Genius Bar charges for doing it? Or of not know of anhwere that might do it free?

The Genius Bar shouldn't charge you money for this. They'd be the best place to go, but try Googling around before you go.
Probably your iTunes is not the latest version.
Can you tell us what your operating system is and what version of iTunes you have?
You don't say what operating system you are using - please always post this when you have a question as the answer often depends on it.
Your phone requires iTunes 10.7, which requires Snow Leopard. If you are running a system earlier than Snow Leopard you will have to upgrade to it (Intel Mac required - if you have a PPC Mac you cannot proceed).
If you are using Snow Leopard or later you should update to iTunes 11.
i have mac os x 10.6.8, and my itunes is 11.0.5.

same problem here.. I have 0sx 10.6.8 and itunes 11.0.2... last week my iphone, and ipod were syncing / showing up into itunes (cuz I do manual syncing) and this week both ipod and iphone do not show up at all.
None of the software on the ipod or iphone has changed....
What up with that?

- how much memory is free? I know you cannot see that in iTunes now, but do you remember?
Perhaps a third party app can connect and then you can answer this question. There are several but I have good experience with Diskaid. If you run that and connect the cable, it sees the iPhone and displays what is on it. If it does that it means that the issue probably is in iTunes somehow and not really in the iPhone. It also displays the memory usage, so you can answer the question.
Well I have found the trick. Trun off the iphone, and restart/trun back on.... same with computer... relaunch itunes...and it appeared like a charm!

hey hey hey... for over 8 years I have been using my old G5 that is stuck into 10.5.8.... and it has my username and password imbedded into keychain which was started with a Yahoo account as a back up.... since then, I have forgotten a long time ago of what it is! But keychain in my G5 does remember. Since then, my email address has changed from mobile me, to icloud etc.... my new laptop is not as smart..... and does not contain any of the info.... and I had to manually log in.... and I did last night for the 1st time with my icloud account.... and that is when it asked me to agree to all the legal requirements... and I realized it was not my original account.... but nevertheless it worked! this was my 1st ever post via that name!... now this one is the 2nd!

I had the exact same problem. After I updated my iPhone to iOs 7.04, my phone wouldn't connect to my computer. I.e. it wouldn't charge and it wasn't recognized by iTunes. I initially thought that it was the cable or my USB port, but I double checked those and they were fine. After trying Michel le mike's suggestion of turning everything off (phone and computer) and back on, the whole system is back to normal.
