There are a few things to try. The first is if it is purchased, just delete the songs and download them again from the purchases section in iTunes. The second is to try and convert the songs to a different format. The article below will assist with that further.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

When I play a song it plays about 2 seconds of it before it skips to another song. I bought the song as a part of an album & I can't remember it ever not working before. I tried playing it on my iPad & the same thing happened. I then went to try & re-download it from the iTunes store & can only listen to 2 seconds of it even in the store. I don't know what to do next.

This has happened to me as well. I can listen to the songs in itunes and can see them on my iphone but can't play them. It shows the image but skips to the next song. This is on some songs in an album - some can play and some not. They are ones loaded a very long time ago from CD's.

This happned to me as well, and I can't get to the bottom of it. Because of it, I will no longer purchase music from iTunes and have switched to spotify. Still, I would like to recover the music I have purchased. Shame on iTunes.

Here is the solution:
Un-sync all your music to remove it from the device, then restart (hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go). Now re-sync your music.

So, what is it with songs that are not from the itunes store, but are coming from cd's and other download sources that all of a sudden do not play on my ipad and have a red stop button in a red round circle around them, behind the title? I've tried several things, but this seems to have happened after the last itunes version update.

I am having the same problem! I can't play thousands of songs that I've downloaded from old CDs. I am pretty upset. Itunes support has told me I "can download old purchases," but that nowehere near solves my problem.
