Wifi will not turn on after updating to 10.8.5

I updated to Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on my 2008 model MacBook and now I cannot turn on the wifi. I go to System Preferences, Network then click on wifi. I click Turn Wi-Fi On but it doesn't respond.

I've tried three things to fix it:

1) reboot

2) Deleted all Network settings and created a new WiFi profile

3) Went to Apple, About This Mac, More Info...., System Report, Wifi

There is a lot of information in this window but the status says Off.

Any advice for me to get my WiFi working again?

Back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

I have the same problem with same macbook model.. There's no other way to fix it? Reinstalling the os is ridicoulous please....

edit: Moreover, on the tutorial u linked to reinstall OS, before first step u can read: " Important: You need to be connected to the Internet to reinstall OS X."

How can I be connected to the internet to reinstall the OS if I'm doing it because wi-fi doesn't turn on anymore? Methaphysics here.... In my case I don't even have the chance to connect the mac through ethernet... Any solutions?

I am having the same problem and the same model, and in some way(which I don't know) the wifi came back sometimes after reboot. For the last time, I have rebooted for around 10 times to get the wifi back and then I decided not to shut down until Apple fix this bug.

Notice:

In my case, this way always works but it costs sometime, because you never know in which reboot the wifi will came back.

Each time I reboot, I do click "turn on the wifi", which is by default turned off, then I check whether the wifi is back. If not, reboot again.

If you luckily have your wifi back, don't reboot then, cuz you will lose it again. I've verified this for two times until I got wifi back for the third time .

I have the same problem. It will search and search for networks.

If I remove the wifi under network and reboot. Add the wifi back under network then my wifi will work for that session. If I reboot it reverts back to search for networks continuously.

This happend right after the 10.8.5 update.

I also read to try and install the 10.8.5 combo update, wifi worked durring the frist reboot but then reverted back to the way it was after.

This is quite an annoying problem as my timemachine was off so I can't go back to 10.8.4.

Wifi will not turn on after updating to 10.8.5
