ARD 3.0 hangs at beginning on airport

When I start ARD and am on airport, it freezes on "Searching" (scanner view) for about 10 minutes. Then, all computers appear and it works perfectly. If I am plugged in to ethernet, all computers appear immediately. Any ideas why this is the case?

Powermac G5 / Powerbook 15", Mac OS X (10.4.6)
