The startup chime works just fine, but after booting, no other sound using iTunes, Skype... etc. No program permits sound.
I have done all the normal stuff, NVRAM, SMC etc but nothing works. Tried restarting in safe mode, but safe mode disables all sound.
Anybody have idea? (using iMac)

Have you looked at System Preferences / Sound ?
Check the setting of Output volume and make sure the Mute button is not checked.
Also, Apple Menu / About This Mac / More Info / System Report. Under Hardware on the left, select Audio. Under devices do you see anything in Built-in Output?
