Sep 13, 2013 3:27 PM in response to Debbie Colby MichelPM,If this is an older iMac and the USB optical drive you purchased was Apple's external optical drive, these are not designed to work with older Macs or Macs that already have a bulit-in CD/DVD optical drive.
Also, not every optical drive on the market is compatible with Macs.

Sep 13, 2013 6:11 PM in response to Debbie Colby a brody,USB is rarely bootable under Mac OS X and PowerPC Macs. Get a Firewire Superdrive from http://www.macsales.com/ if your intent is to boot the machine. PPC, which is PowerPC, indicates the Mac predates 2006.
