Itunes crashes on device connect and even without

If I run Itunes (latest) from my xp pc, it runs. If I then connect the device, it crashes. If I run it without the device, it may or may not crash. Troubleshooter only found a problem with device detection. I've rebooted everything, and I even restored pc to yesterday.
