Q: Are there known issues in 10.8.5

Hi everyone, I'm new here and hoping to get some assistance please.

I updated from 10.8.4 to 10.8.5 today, and since then my MacBook Pro (circa 2008, but apparently compatible with this update) has just hung, at least twice.  Are there any known issues with 10.8.5 that might account for this?

I've done a Command-R restart and used Disk Utility to verify permissions on, and repair the built-in disk; Disk Utility reported that the disk was good, did not need to do any repairs.  (Did this once).

After a subsequent restart I my MBP hung again while I was using Finder and Preview.  The spinning blue ball goes solid, and both the magic mouse and the touchpad do not respond.  I'm actually a little surprised and rather hopeful now I've managed to get to this point.

I have a current Time Machine backup and Install OS X Mountain Lion.App (10.8.4) on a USB drive - just in case.

Thanks in advance

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

with regard to mid2007 freezing after instal, updating ssd firmware was not a fix for me. After the instal of update to 10.8.5 I can not get to the login window, much less a working OS. so I am NOT talking about freezes after loging into a working desktop environement.  I'm talking about getting to the grey screen with the apple log and a spinning wheel that freezes. I updated firmware on ssd (on drive bus) =same freeze. I instaled 10.8.5 on spindle drive (super drive bus) = same freeze. I did a clean instal on both (to eliminate 3rd party software conflict like istat etc)=same freeze. I  clean installed 10.8.2 on ext. drive which ran fine, then applied update 10.8.5 = same freeze. I booted in verbose mode and in every case the offending error seems to be smc errors which are related to low level fans/power usage.

The ONLY reason I'm adding this late post to this thread is to let people know that I also tried several upgrade instals of Mavericks=same freeze, So the first relase of Mavericks does not fix this code.

Apple decided not to support third party apps like skype in 10.8.5.  Can't wait for the law suit against them.

On what grounds would this imaginary lawsuit be filed?

    Hello Mark,

Please see if the information in this thread posting helps you:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24163772#24163772

In this case, disabling wi-fi on older Macs like your resulted in similar freeze issues as your.

    Regards,

    Ira

    Hi Ira,

Thank You for the post. Man, I whish I had that before doing all the troubleshooting and several SuperDuper restores. lol

I havn't had a boot problem (or any other) after turning off all ipv6 throught the terminal commands and dissabling "show WiFi status in menu bar" to help preventing toggling WiFi off, as described in this post by Xiao Doudou before updating 10.8.4 to 10.8.5 at  http:/https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5474520?start=15&tstart=0

This has worked perfectly and allows me to install updates:

    1. Use Finder to open the Applications folder
    2. Select the "Utilities" folder
    3. Select "Terminal"
    4. A screen will open.  At the prompt, enter the following command to determine all of your Mac's network interfaces:  networksetup -listallnetworkservices
    5. To disable IPv6 for wireless, enter the following command: networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi
    6. To disable IPv6 for Ethernet, enter the following command: networksetup -setv6off Ethernet
    7. To exit the terminal window, open the "Terminal" menu next to the Apple menu at the top left of the screen and select "Quit Terminal"

I don't plan on going to Mavericks until this issue (and others in Mavericks) are fixed. But for the meantime,  your post will be a bigtime help if an update resets those terminal changes and the boot hangs again. THANK YOU!
