Q: Personal Hotspot

I'm a little confused. I've never had to use personal hotspot before, but I find that I'm needing it more and more. I have a question about using it as a wifi device. It seems like in order to get my computer to recognize it as a hotspot, I have to have the personal hotspot menu open. It doesn't matter that I've connected to it before, or even if it's been turned off since the last time I connected it. Everytime, in order to connect my computer to my phone, I have to open the hotspot menu and then my computer will recognize it as a wifi device. Shouldn't it be discoverable whether the menu is open or not?

I have this same problem. The generic link from razmee didn't help at all. Did you get it sorted out yet? glenn (iPhone 4s, iOS 7.0.2)

What I understand is that in order for your phone to be discoverable as a hotspot, it has to have the hotspot menu open and on. For instance, if you are on the homepage, your phone is not discoverable as a hotspot. If you are on the hotspot menu, your phone is discoverable. Best I can tell, it's designed as a security precaution to keep your phone from being accessed without your knowledge. Minor inconvenience for me but nothing I can't deal with.

That would make sense, if it wasn't for the fact that any of my family, who have at one time or another used my Personal Hotspot, can just pop open their computer without my iPhone anywhere near the Settings Menu, and immediately jump onto my Personal Hotspot. If they sleep their computer, then open computer, automatically back on my hotspot. If I sleep my computer I have to go back into Settings-->Personal Hotspot, then look for the hotspot on my computer wifi. Something not right.

Try this yourself anyone. Let us know.
