TC cannot connect to existing network

Evening, everyone. Thanks in advance for helping.

To preface, I am a complete technology moron. So please, when answering, it's ok to answer me like I'm 10 (though most 10 year olds could probably get this and not need help).

I have a 2012 MBP running 10.8.4. I don't remember what animal that is. I just today got an Apple Time Capsule, 2TB, the one that stands up rather than is wide. Also in my house is a Linksys 2.4 GHz router and an Ubee modem (I don't think we bought it, I think it's what came with our internet).

I would like to use the TC as an external hard drive. That's it. I got it because in theory it should just work with my mac. Maybe so, maybe there's a PEBCAK error. I already tried a Seagate Wireless and it wasn't HFS+ formatted so it wouldn't do what I wanted.

I want to be able to just have my computer back up my files once or twice a day. I don't want to actually be connected to the TC, and I don't want to have to go offline from the main internet to my own network to do it. I want to store movies and documents on it and be able to watch them and surf the web at the same time.

If it acts as my router after that, great. I don't care one way or another. I have a router that works. I just want to be able to store stuff on it without having to go offline to back up to it.

Any help, please?

Some of what you want to do is going to be hard.

Actually installing in the network should be easy enough.

Plug the WAN port of the TC by ethernet into the LAN port of the Linksys.

On your MBP.. wait for the computer to pick up the new wireless signal from the TC.. click on it and airport utility will open.. the utility will then attempt to setup the TC to your network which should be in bridge.

If that fails, click the TC icon in airport utility and in the summary page that comes up click edit.. change the TC to bridge mode.

You should have ipv6 turned on to local link for wifi connection for this to work.

TM is setup to backup hourly.. adjusting it is not a great idea.. but there is software available to change the period.

See Q13 for backup schedule. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

You must be connected to the TC all the time for this to work.. and you must have the TC connected to the internet otherwise you will always be having issues.

The TC is designed as a target for TM backups.. not a file store.. it has no means of backing itself up and storing backups and data can lead to issues.

See Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html

If you do not have backups the files on the TC will be lost when the TC breaks.. which it will do one day. TM cannot backup TC. it is not capable of backing up network drives.

And if you use a decent backup software like CCC where are you going to back files to??

It is better to offload files to external drive and then TM can back that up the TC along with internal drive/s.

Thank you.

Told you I'm an idiot, though, I'm already confused. I'm going to be using my TC to back up files. So I need to back up my back up files?

I don't care about the schedule. I also don't use TM right now so I have no idea what it does or when. I will, if this ever gets hooked up.

In order to get back online I put my ethernet cable back in the internet slot on the Linksys and the other end back into my modem. So while the TC is now showing along with my other airport express (progress!), it says it's not found now that I've disconnected it. Is there a next step?

Edit: Streaming movies while not having them on my actual computer. True. I could see downloading them from iTunes, putting them on the TC, and then deleting them from my computer. If they're gone, I can always redownload them later. But I don't need to store them locally.

You stated you wanted the TC as external hard disk.. I assumed that you would place files on it.. and that those files would not be on your Mac. If you want a purely external drive the TC is the hardest way possible to achieve it.

If you are not using a backup software or Time Machine.. how are you backing up??

You will find it difficult to do it manually.. as you will surely forget something you need.

Now i am kinda lost.

The modem should be plugged into a router.. what modem exactly do you have?? What kind of broadband? Is the modem also a router or is that role passed to the Linksys??

What model is the Linksys?

Can you simply replace the Linksys with the TC.. that would be a lot easier.

If you disconnect the TC.. then you cannot find it.. because it is disconnected.. I must be missing something.. but that makes perfect sense. Reconnect it and then you can find it.. the TC must be bridged and it must be plugged by ethernet into the Linksys..

Or you need to completely eliminate the Linksys and use the TC in its place.

Well, that explains a lot. What works with a 2012 MBP 15" retina display? I've tried the Seagate Wireless and now this.

Right now in theory I back up to amazon via jungle disk. I have my doubts that new files are going over. Pictures go to my computer from android phone via dropbox, but I'm about to have to pay for more space. Some files have gone to google. The thought was to get a TC and use Time Machine. Both mac products, and then I wouldn't have to pay for outside space every month.

It's an Ubee modem, I think. That's what the front says (it's not a brand I've heard of). It looks like this. http://www.amazon.com/uBee-DDM3513-Docsis-Cable-Modem/dp/B005Y1UFIM

We have Xfinity, but I don't know if it's DSL or cable or what.

Our Linksys is our router. So there's an ethernet cable from the model (there's just one port on the back, so I know for a fact that's not screwed up) to the Linksys (where it goes into "internet" and then it works).

"What model is the Linksys?"

Goodness. Old. http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Wireless-G-2-4-Wireless-Router/dp/B001G6I5MM That's it.

"Can you simply replace the Linksys with the TC.. that would be a lot easier."

Sure, if it'll work.

I did all that you said, connected the TC to the modem, followed the prompts and your steps, the light went green on the TC, it said I was connected to my wireless network (rather than the one it was trying to make just for the TC), and it never went online. Nothing loaded. I couldn't get back here. I couldn't go to other sites. I couldn't get mail, my chat client was dead. So nothing. I unhooked the TC and went back to the linksys, and that's when I asked if there was another step I needed to do to actually get it to work and turn on once everything was done. It was happy enough, just completely not letting me online.

Sounds like this isn't working either. What's a good external drive that I don't have to physically connect to my laptop that will work via Time Machine? Like I said, I'll be storing a few files on it, but the majority will be TV/movies that I don't want to have to stream from iTunes, or store on my local drive. My pictures I do try to put in multiple spots, but a lot of what fills my drive are car and carseat manuals (I'm a professional carseat technician, and thankfully much better at that than this!) and movies, so if I could offload those then great, but if they're lost I can always redownload them.

You've been very helpful, and I appreciate it! Thanks.
