Q: I had to change to a new Apple MacBook Pro.  I deauthorized my old computer, authorized the new one and less than a quarter of my media shows up in the new computer.  Everything that was downloaded from a cd is missing.  Any help?

I had to change to a new Apple MacBook Pro.  I deauthorized my old computer, authorized the new one and the only media that shows up are items with a cloud.  Everything that was downloaded from a cd, including personal movie files, are missing.  It's as if my former library is gone.  How can I find it again? Or is this just Apples way of screwing with me?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

    They are on your old computer.

    Those files should still be on the old computer from which you will need to copy them manually. Apple's not screwing with you.

    This sounds like a dumb question, even to me, but how do I transfer the old files?  Pull them individually onto an external drive?  Or is there an easier way?

    There are a few ways. One is to copy the files you want onto an external drive, then restore them from the external drive to your new computer.

     

    Another approach is to use your local network and enable File Sharing on the old computer to enable you to transfer files directly over your network: Mac Basics- File Sharing.

     

    A third approach is to connect the two computers using a Firewire cable then using Target Disk Mode to transfer the files. Both computers will need to have a Firewire port and you will need a Firewire cable.

    I'll be at work tomorrow with access to both computers and will give your suggestions a try.  I'll start with the file sharing and if that isn't successful, I have a firewire cable.  That's the same as an ethernet cable, right?

    No. Firewire and Ethernet are not the same. Ethernet would be used to connect the computers to your network. A Firewire cable is used to connect the computers directly. They are different ports.

    Ok, I don't have a firewire cable.  So I'll try the filesharing option first, before I start manually dragging files onto my external drive.
