Q: Why can't my ibook be a wifi hotspot when connected to a mobile dongle?

I can make my computer into a wifi hotspot when connected to an ethernet cable. This is great for getting new stuff onto my ipod touch and using another computer on the net at the same time. But if we change to a mobile dongle (not the Huawei as indicated in system preferences) our internet speed is MUCH better but then we can't share our internet wirelessly to other devices. Are there any ways of getting the computer to do this?

And before people suggest we just buy a whole new computer, let me say we are dedicated to thrift and economy. Apart from the older OS and its incompatibility with some things, my ibook works just fine and we have no need (or means) to upgrade.

ibookG4, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

WiFi hotspotting can be done, but only if another networking standard is used to receive the internet.  Thus you can do Internet sharing over WiFi, if you use ethernet to receive the internet, or vice versa.  But you can't both receive the internet and distribute over the same standard at the same time.   Firewire can also distribute IP as well.

Alternatively, you could look for a mobile broadband (3G/4G) hotspot with built-in Wi-Fi (there are such devices from companies like Huawei and ZTE). Typically, the hotspot holds a SIM card.

It is also possible to connect an existing USB mobile broadband stick (with its contained SIM card) to a dedicated 3G/4G mobile broadband router (for example, from Dovado).

Yes thanks, I think that may be our next option.
