Why do i have restore my ipad when i update the operating system. The last few upgrades have needed me to do this and it takes ages. My iphone updates without any problems and it is very frustrating

In certain situations, an iPad will automatically go into recovery mode after an update issue.
You will be ask to connect your iPad to the computer to recover your iPad.
Not if you have IOS 5 and above.
Ive tried over the air, but then it prompts me to connect to itunes on the pc which is when it wants to wipe the system and start again. It does eventually update, but its frustrating as it takes 3 or 4 goes and the whole thing takes about 3 hours from start to finish, whereas the iphone updates in minutes
I have got ios 6 latest version and it still wants to restore the full system but it takes 3 or 4 goes to install the upgrade
You are probably updating via your computer.
You should have updated Over The Air (OTA).
