iMac will not boot, grey screen, chime, apple logo, switches off

My 5 year old Mac will not boot and get past the grey screen. I hear the chime, apple logo appears, spinning wheel keeps spinning but progress bar doesn't progress and sometimes if just switches off. I've tried soft boot but nothing. I've disconnect everything except keyboard, turned on and off, power from other sockets but nothing.... Please has anyone got any other ideas?

You say the progress bar doesn't progress.

Normally, there isn't a progress bar at start up other than when a firmware upgrade (or similar) is taking place.

Normal boot is Boot Chime, Apple Logo, Spinning Wheel and then Log In screen or Desktop loads depending on your preference setting for Auto Login.

If you restart and a progress bar comes up, leave it until the progress bar fills and completes. Your system should then start (restart) normally.
