using my btinternet.com address in Mail does not receive emails.

I have entered all the details for my btinternet.com address into Mail and each time I try although I can send messages, I am not able to receive any. If I send an email to myself it shows up when I log into BT.Yaho on the web but not in Mail. Have never gotten my bt account to work on Mail. Is this a common problem or am I making a fundamental error in setup? Help much appreciated.

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Thank you for the links below. Unfortunately I have already tried all these methods and have been unsuccessful. I am also able to send but not receive @me.com messages on the Mail app on my Mac. Do I need to take the Mac to my nearest Apple store for them to enter the details manually as I cannot get a manual option on Mail. ? Hoping you can help.
