Mailto: links don't work

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of re-building a couple of webpages and I want to include a contact link, that happened to be working the last time I tested it, which was last year and it worked fine. A few weeks ago, I visited my website and clicked on the "contact," link which had my email address in the source and took anyone to their webmail form to be able to write to me, but now I am taken to another page that tells me that Safari can't open the specified address because Mac OS X doesn't recognize Internet addresses starting with "mailto." When I go to other browsers to test my page, when I click on the link, it remains static. So, I'm assuming the link must not be taking visitors to their webmail form. I'm using the Komper editor for building the pages. Would anyone be able to tell me how to fix this or what format I need to put this in, so that I can be contacted? I'd be most appreciative for any insight. Thank you. -Ella

Does the test link here work ?

If so, alter your code to match the example.

If not - open Mail - Preferences - General & make sure that Mail is set as the default email reader.

Hello andyBall,

I really appreciate you responding and coming to my aid. I've gone to the Preferences area in the mail (I'm on iCloud), as I don't have the mail app that came with my computer. I'm going into the mail Preferences under iCloud and I'm not seeing the part where you say to set Mail as the default email reader. I took a snapshot of the iCloud app, I'm using. Again, thank you for your help. -Ella

BTW: Yes, the test link worked.

Since the test link works - it's presumably a change in code needed for your pages. It's not clear what opened when it worked, but that's a standard mailto link, so it seems that you've some application set to open emails, even if not Apple's Mail app.

What code is being used now, that doesn't work - can you link to the page(s) ?.

The code that I have been using up till recently that is no longer being excepted by OS X/Safari was "mailto:myname@webmailaddress.com," but I took it out of my website since it wasn't working. On other html code forums, I've been told that I'd be better off inserting a form code. I haven't tried that yet, as I would much prefer a contact link. Thank you for your help and insight. -Ella

Hi,

Well, I inserted the code that you supplied above, on my webpage and it still didn't work, simply because it has the dreaded word "mailto:." The link that you created which is here works fine, but the link that says Send mail, only takes me to a gray page, as you'll see when you click on it. Oh well, guess I'll go try the codes for forms. Thanx for your assistance. Have a great evening. -Ella

P.S. Would you happen to know where I can get the Mail app that comes with OS X? I deleted it some time ago, because I didn't think I'd be needing it anymore.

If I understand you correctly - the code seems to be getting altered by the time you get it on your web pages.... because if you copied the code from the w3schools link, you ought to get the same results on your own pages as you do there. (I'm not clear on what actually opens when you click a 'working' example, since you don't have Mail)

Re replacing Mail - which OS X version are you using ?.

If I'm understanding you correctly, when the link on my webpage marked "contact," was working, last year, whatever person was looking at my page (if interested) could click on the "contact" link and they were taken to whatever webmail form they used to send me an email. And you're the standare "mailto:" worked perfectly last year, but I don't know what Macintosh OS X and Safari has done to prevent it from working. Am I confusing you even more? That's the best I can explain it to you. -Kd

Andy,

As I explained above, I am having the same results with the blue link "Send mail," that you created. When I click on it, this the page I am taken to. Thank you. -Kd

Ok - for 10.6 you need to reinstall from the Snow Leopard DVD, then apply the 10.6.8 combo update & latest security update

You can save some time by choosing optional installs & installing only Mail - as described here

but don't open it until you've updated. Back up beforehand.

You might consider https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ if you just want an email app to catch mailto links. Not because it's better or worse - just easier to get...

You said earlier that the mailto test link here worked for you, yet others didn't - what happens when you click the link there ?.

When I click on the link there, like I said, I get taken to the gray page that I showed you above. I did try another browser called SeaMonkey and that did take be to the email form that I wanted. What I have to wonder is, when people visit my page and click on the link, "contact," does it even work? -Ella

I see : when you said 'Yes, the test link worked', I thought it opened a new Mail message as expected, rather than 'I get taken to the gray page that I showed you above'...

In that case, since the test doesn't work - it's very likely due only to your not having an email application, so Safari doesn't know what to do with such links. Try downloading Thunderbird - there's no need to set it up or use it - ust open it & agree that it should be the default client, then try a mailto link.

If you want to post a link to your page for checking, do so.
