Can i upgrade from OS X 10.6.4 to a later OS X version? I cannot install the JAVA version that i require.

You can update to v10.6.8.
Download and install > Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Then restart your Mac.
You can upgrade to v10.7 Lion if your Mac meets v10.7 requirements > System requirements for OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6
The link you posted from for Java is for v10.6 only. Not v10.7.
First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
Identifier is Macbook 7,1. But i would like to install Java 7 but apparently need Mac OS X 10.7.3 or later. Is it possible to upgrade to this? Thanks
You certainly can update to 10.7 or directly to 10.8. Either will cost you $20.00. Here's the link for 10.8:
