Printer/TC/MBP/iMac Network

I have a Netgear router which is hardwired to my TC. My MBP and my iMac each share the TC network and of course the MBP can bounce between both the TC and Netgear networks dependant upon my location in the house. My printer is hardwired to the TC.

Why is it then that, when my MBP is on either the TC or Netgear network, it cannot see the printer ..... unless the iMac is awake?😕

Describe the printer setup.. we are not sure what printer it is nor how it is connected.. is it USB? Is it ethernet? Is it wireless?

Is it plugged into the TC or the Netgear?

What mode is the TC in? Can a computer plugged into the netgear access a computer plugged into the TC?

There is some weird stuff that happens.. USB printers plugged into router can be captured by a device.. I have seen the symptoms you have on a correctly setup network.. and I don't know the exact reason.. but the solution is usually to figure out a new way to locate the printer.

As I said the printer (Samsung CLX 3170) is hard-wired directly to the TC (by ethernet cable). There's no computer plugged into the Netgear; each computer accesses the LANs via either the TC or Netgear networks. (No clue as to mode of TC - never come across an issue before where I've had to consider this).

I can locate the printer on my MBP if I merely wake up my iMac (which remember is relying on the TC network for connectivity) when the printer then becomes visible to the MBP (which happens to be relying on the Netgear router network for connectivity)!

My confusion is that I cannot see what influence the iMac is having on the visibility of the printer to the MBP when:

1) the Samsung printer is connected by a cable to the TC

2) the Netgear router is connected by cable to the TC and

3) the MBP is accessing the Netgear LAN

I should add that I have not always had this problem but, for the life of me, I cannot think of any changes that could have been made that might result in the "what has the iMac got to do with it" issue!!

Thanks for clarifying and sorry I missed the wired to the TC bit..

There is a huge difference between network and usb connected though so we did need to clear that up.

Now what I need to know is the IP of the printer.. the IP of the iMac and the IP of the MBP connected by the Netgear LAN..

Just check each device for its IP.. then I want you to test by opening a terminal and pinging the printer from the MBP.. do it with the iMac off and then with the iMac on and tell me the result.

There is a chance the iMac has captured the printer and is sharing it to the network.

Ok.. since you can connect to the printer just fine..

Leave the iMac off.. delete the present printer setup in the Mac and redo it.

The iMac should really have nothing to do with it.

Here are the printer setup documents I have collected that Apple detail.

Correct.. I do not know where the setting is in Macs.. used to drive me crazy when I serviced PC networks.. as some secretary would decide to tick the share the printer to the network.. and stop the printer working for everyone except her.. so you needed to go around all the computers and find who it is whats done it. A three hour call out to go around and uncheck a box.

As they say.. have a go.

Sep 17, 2013 12:25 AM in response to LaPastenague

Yup - that's worked fine from the MBP both with the iMac ON and asleep, as well as shutdown completely!

Really appreciate your thorough diagnosis and for talking me through the resolution ( ....particularly as we nicked the Ashes from you!)

Many, many thanks and congrats for your team stuffing us Pommes last night in the One Day series in revenge!

LOL!!

Why is every person in the UK saying that to us these days.. ?? I guess we were rather proud in the days of our ascendency and deserve some severe humbling now that the tables are turned.. enjoy it while it lasts!! But I think it might take several years and whole new batch of players before we are competitive again.

One day.. and 20-20 are what has wrecked test cricket.. that and bribery from the sub-continent.

Hmmmmmmm!!!

Would you believe it - wondering if my printer appeared this morning to have been 'grabbed' again ....

Symptoms:

Selected Print from my MBP (on Netgear LAN) but window appeared showing "Printer not connected"

Awoke iMac upstairs (on TC LAN) .... which before has then sparked the printer into action

... this time = nothing

Deleted printer from my MBP

Re-loaded printer to MBP

Selected print on MBP (iMAc still awake at this stage)

Hey presto document printed from MBP
