There are maintenence routines that run every night, the only problem is that your system must be up and running for this to happen.

OS X is a very robust operating system and pretty much takes care of itself.

In my testing of the supposed "cleanup" applications, I have found them to be either worthless or dangerous.

For those reasons I strongly recomend against their installation and use.

OS X does not require defragmenting like Windows and maintains itself very well without the use of third party cleaners.

So basiclly "If it's not broken, don't try and fix it"

The closest you can get to a general “tune-up,” is the Safe Boot, followed by a normal reboot. Combine this with verifying/repairing permissions from Disk Utility after software installs/updates.
