Contacts - Formatting Phone Numbers

Can I turn off the automatic "formatting" of phone numbers in Contacts?

Many of my contacts are in other countries and I would like to use the format

that is common to each country. Easier to remember, etc!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Not solved! Don't the developers have a check list when launching a new system?! All the phone numbers of my contacts were formatted the way I wanted them to be formatted in my former Mac (Yosemite) - I bought a new Mac with the new El Capitan OS and all went awry: the numbers are no longer formatted the way I entered them; the groups in my iPad and iPhone are no longer alphabetical.

Very disappointed with the Apple team having gone ahead with a system without properly checked everything out before its launch. Very aggravating, unproductive and waste of resources as I had to speak/see 4 senior Apple professionals to discover the flaws that I was told would probably be resolved in the next version.

Frankly, this is making me wary of updates/new products if they are not thoroughly checked out.
