Q: My MacBook Pro has keeps having recurring kernel panics

Hello!

 

My MacBook Pro keeps having kernel panics and it always happens when I hit the F3 (multi window) function. It doesn't happen every time I use this key - but every few weeks it throws a fit and the screen just goes black.

 

Is this some kind of bug? Can anyone read panic reports?

 

This is my first time of actually writing to the support community even though I've been a Mac User for nearly 8 years.

    The important part of the error message is the NVRM read error.  If you do a search for that term on this site you will find there a several reasons for this kernal panic. Everything from overheating to video card errors mostly when using more than one display.  You may be better off taking it to a technician as a problem like this requires some professional tools and expertise.  Sorry!

    When you say more than one display, so like, a YouTube web page and VLC open at the same time, say?

     

    Thanks for the NVRM clue. I'll do search on it when I can face it. Otherwise I'll be in danger of overheating and going into kernal panic.

    Sorry Jan maybe I got it wrong.  When you say "multi window" I assumed you were using a seperate monitor/display.  If not then I suggest it is a harware problem.  If you take it to a Genius Bar at an apple store near you they may be able to help you.  The bottom line is it doesn't sound like a bug.  It's difficult to diagnose this sort of stuff without a lot of details, eg, what model are you using, what year, what OS etc etc.  Don't have a kernal panic of your own, if you still have Apple Care or even if you don't this one is for the techies.

    Most likely, this is the culprit.

    Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable this one. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by  Rember.  See

    Sorry BaliMac,

     

    I don't know what the button is called, but it's the one which is F3 on my keyboard where you can zoom out and it shows you all the windows you've got open in all the different programs.

    My computer only has a kernel panic when I hit this button, which is why I wondered whether it was a bug that other users had experienced.

     

    I'll try what Baltwo suggested and see what happens!
