Erase All Content and Settings when swapping iphones.

My husband and I are going to be swapping iPhones when we get the new iphone 5S. I remember how to do this on our own by swapping sims and then calling AT&T to correct the IMEI numbers. I have forgotton however, when doing the erase all content and settings, do I do this before or after I remove the sim card on each phone?

THANK YOU!

I have gone through this process multiple times (as I buy a new iPhone every year). But unlike you, I sell my old iPhone so I sell it with the old SIM card in place. I'm saying I know this works if you use the old SIM card. What I don't know is exactly when to insert the new one.

My educated guess is this: You can clear the iPhone per the article. You could then shut it down and remove the old SIM card and insert the new one. Then power up the iPhone and let it initialize and set up as if it were brand new with the new SIM in place.

... or to be safe, double check the above with your cellular carrier.

When we get the new iphone 5S it will come with a new sim card of course. Since his old iphone (4S) has a different size Sim card, we are going to activate his iphone as one would normally do with a new phone with this new sim. Then after we backup each phone to our respective iTunes, we turn off the phones and do the Erase all content. Again though what I don't remember is leaving the sim cards in or out at this point. I hate having to call the carrier. This has been done many times I am sure. I just can't remember that one step!
