Hello everyone 🙂 this is my first post here 🙂

It has just been a month since i bought my macbook air (mid 2013 haswell) and im seeing some weird spots right under the keyboard :/

the weird part is that ive barely used my laptop till now, and taken extremely good care of it. i have absolutely no idea how these got here...

there are a few other places as well, where these spots have come up... can anyone please help me regarding this? have you seen anything like this before?User uploaded file

thats an extremely minor casting defect in the alloy case.

contact Apple to see about your options.

as a bit of a metal worker Ive seen that before in other alloy casings, however i dont recall seeing same on an Apple case.

To be fair however those marks are extremely negligible, and sub .5 mm.

sometimes called a casting blister

Casting Blister – A surface bubble caused by gas expansion (usually from heating) which was trapped within the die casting or beneath the plating...alloy is hot and weak so that the internal pressure causes it to creep and produce the blister.

Said cosmetic blemish in no way affects the Air or its casing integrity. 😊

Thats good. Ive heard that the counterfeit ones are (thankfully) extremely rare.

Contact Apple about the aluminum casting marks.

Theyre on the edge and deeper than the bead blasting went. Such marks on casings, IF they appear are always (almost) on the EDGE due to bead blasting not fully hitting it for resurfacing after casting.

.. will apple accept this sort of cosmetic disrepancy outside of the 14 day return rule?

That determination will have to come from Apple, noone here can say what the minimum tollerance pass is for the casting blister 😊

Looks good. Looks just like mine

see the keyboard cover off to the side 😊

If Apple says nay on the case, DO NOT try to sand or buff it out yourself, youlll make it look horrible, trust me.

Some people who dropped their Mac, or scratched it bad tried to do that and woefully regretted making a blemish look like an eyesore.

Nothing is hardly more painfully hard than trying to buff out and then re-dull the finish to match sand or bead blasted aluminum. Its a very hard skill that took me many years to get right.

yeah i kindof know... im an engineer myself, so i have a little idea on these stuff 🙂

i use the keyboard cover whenever i use the laptop on my desk 😝 i learnt it the hard way when my brother had dropped a glass full of coke on my previous macbook pro... had to get the entire unibody replaced 😟

anyways, more of these casing blisters arent gonna show up right???

any way to get rid of them??? there are many along tht very edge of the laptop...

More, NO. Get rid of them, YES. However it takes some high end skills to sand out and match bead blasted aluminum.

Getting marks out- very easy

feathering out the grinding - hard

matching the bead blasting to the rest - very very HARD (done it many times on aluminum)

even if you had the equipment to blast finished aluminum, Id never dare say do it. Dont try doing that

⚠Dont get drastic over tiny marks before contacting Apple about your options. 😊
