I can't setup iMessage on my Macbook Air.

When I open my iMessage, it automatically lgins with my gmail account. I want to login in iMessage with my Apple ID. I have read the support. When I click iMessage option in the accounts under iMessage bar, nothing happens. I don't even get an error message.
