iphone 5. black screen of death???

So i went to bed the other night and my phone worked fine. When i woke up the next morning, the screen was completely black. now that the screen is completely black, the vibrate button doesnt work. No Vibration, no noises. I cant hold down on the lock and home button to try to turn it off because my lock buttons broken. My lock button has been broken now for about 4 months but i just put on a setting which allows me to click on a button and lock my screen so i didnt get it fixed. My only solution was to let the phone die and then charge it and turn it back on. After 2 days, it finally dies. I plug it in and the charging icon comes up. I think to myself perfect, nothing is wrong with the screen or i wouldnt be able to see this image. So after it starts charging, it finally tries to turn on by itself. The apple icon appears as usual, then nothing. The apple icon has been up on the screen now for about 5 hours and still nothing. Here is the biggest and stupidest part of the story. I didnt back up my phone since ive owned it, and i have really important pictures and information i need to get off the phone. Is there anyway i can recover this information, or any way i can fix my phone???? It will also not respond when i plug it into the computer. PLEASE HELP!!!

Make an appointment with Apple and take it to a store. You may just be SOL for the photos, but I would think the phone may still be in warranty (unless you got it wet or dropped it).

I have to ask, if the lock button has been broken for 4 months, why in the heck would you wait until this disaster to back it up or seek repair? This makes no sense.

Yes. I was able to fix the issue with holding the power button and the home button (kind of a hard reset, not sure that is what it is called).. but question is, how many times. This has started happening many times every day.. I had been a fan of Apple products till now.. Have converted many friends to use Apple products, but lately have started to feel disappointed by the quality. Took the phone to the apple certified support center here in India (Apple doesn't have a own support center) and all they did was to repush the firmware (twice). It doesn't seem to have fixed the issue. Note to Apple, please get your QA/QC back in Shape.

I've just had the same, screen just went black whilst using my 5s.. Siri kept coming on when I held the buttons down and I cold turn the vibrate on and off.. Not even taking the sim out worked or connecting to iTunes... Googled it, sent me here and presto.. Super Tony to the rescue. Cheers mate, knew I could depend on someone for help - my phone is my work and chufffed to bits it;s now working. I'm wondering if upgrading to iOS 8 has done something as it has slowed it down a bit - it's sluggish to beep when emails come up etc.

Anyway, cheers Tony.. (bet you're getting sick of the praise now aren't you.. 😊)

I have something similar but unfortunately the hard reset isn't working for me...I've never had issues until last night, I was using an app and all the sudden my screen went bright blue, then black. I've tried hard resetting quite a few times. I got my phone to reset ONE time, but only for a few min...then it automatically shut itself off and brings up the apple icon screen, then goes blue and black again. Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

I do have auto back up to the cloud, however, where do I find my photos?? I logged into icloud and they are not there 😟 Says my last back up was 10/14/2014...

Also for the past few days an icon keeps popping up saying "can't download now" retry or close, I have no clue what is trying to download in the background...I have a bad feeling about the new "update" they just did.

Last night my iPhone screen turned black too and had been working fine. Before heading out to ATT store where i bought the phone I checked here and Tony you saved the day. not sure if the screen was like that because of very low battery power - I charged it all night but nothing worked until your little helpful trick. thank you thank you
