Apple TV 3rd Gen Freezing/Buffering constantly

Hi,

I have a 3rd gen ATV which has never really given me any trouble, but for the last 6-8 weeks or so, it has been stalling when trying to load movies where it never used to have any problems at all. I have checked and rechecked my network and conducted numourous speedtests at numourous times of the day and night and my speed tests are all pretty consistant at 21Mbps Down and 1 Mbps up and with a 20ms ping.

My ATV is connected to a Netgear D6300 via ethernet and HD video streaming is fine on other medium such as youtube via my iPhone/iPad/PC etc.

I will say though, i have noticed downloading from itunes to my iPhone or iPad has slowed recently too.

I have reset my ATV back to factory and that did not seen to fix the issue's either.

My ATV sits on a shelf under my TV and in between a XBOX360 that is not connected to power and a PS3 that is on most of the time as it is my PVR and above a Wii U that is connected to power but not turned on. I am not sure if it's location makes a difference, but it as always sat there.

Any ideas that could perhaps help me out?

So i think i have finally rectified my issues with my ATV 3rd Gen with latest OS updates.... After a myriad of different routers, modems and modem/routers, 3 different ISP's and isolating devices on my network (none of this made any difference BTW) I have finally got the ATV working like it should.

Just to recap, I am on Aussie crap ADSL2+ getting a consistent 1.9MB/s down and 900KB/s up and I am 690 metres from my exchange. I have not had any issues with streaming other services. The ATV in the lounge room is connected via Ethernet & the Bedroom one is wifi.

I bit the bullet today and spent the money on an Apple AirPort Extreme 802.11ac.

Installation was a breeze and i connected it to my $29 ADSL2+ modem (i use this one as it is the one i have found to work the most consistent for me) and guess what?! The ATV started working like a charm. It has not missed a beat at all, even with my kids streaming to their iPods. Even the ATV in the bedroom which rarely worked (can only use wifi in there coz it is too much of a pain to run cable that far) is now functioning perfectly..

This is not an ad for apple products and after dropping AU$244 on the latest airport extreme, i am both happy and unhappy. I am happy it has rectified my problems, but unhappy it took me spending money on an apple product to get another apple product to function properly. I guess that is how they make money though 😟

I never went for the Airport previously as i prefer modem/routers not routers connected to modems. too messy. But it all works now and i am glad, however, it should have always worked on any good quality router.

All said and done, my 2 chromecast's work better too 🙂

I am having the same problem with our ATV... I have reset the internet, modem, router, and apple TV. I have also done speed tests all say we have a fine connection. The Roku works as does our Xbox One. ATV won't load certain movies from our library (gets stuck on the load screen or gives some ludicrous time in which the content will be available to view .. like 349 minutes...) so we decided to try to airplay. We tried to airplay from our Macbook Pro and we got an error that said the move we bought from itunes couldn't be played on the display due to an HDCP error and that we should try a different display.... Basically we have been having a ton of problems with our ATV for the last year.. We can't get it to work and if it does work (randomly) it will only work for one movie or show... What ***** is we've spent a lot of money on Itunes and would really like to watch the content on something other than my macbook... plus the other frustrating thing is that all the apple troubleshooting sites are a little bit insulting (like check to see if your device is plugged in. yadayadayada) and always seem to say that it's our internet connection speed.... If it were the internet connection speed my Xbox, Roku, Macbook, iPhones, iPads, and iPods wouldn't be working on my wireless network.

Apple- get it together. I'm about to give up on all your products because for some reason you can't seem to et them t work. I shouldn't have to unplug, replug, reset, troubleshoot, speed test, modem switch everytime I want to use your product. Everything else has worked fine- it also seems like you're not responding to any of these issues (as I have tried to call, email, go into apple stores, talked to techs who INSIST it's just me and my internet... which this forum would seem to point out it actually isn't). I get it if there is a software problem or a bug that needs to be fixed- but at least address it so we can try to figure it out!!!!!!!!

I've about had it with this product... for something so expensive it should work- 99 percent of the time- especially with all compatible devices.

I am having the same issues with my ATV 2ndGen and a new 3d Gen. For the most part they will both play Netflix with only the occasional loading problem, but purchases on iTunes that I try and play through AppleTV will constantly either refuse to play at all or tell me it will be available in 1 hour 39 minutes or something ridiculous. I just replaced my old Apple wifi router with a new Airport Extreme 802.11ac and it is still doing it although it did seem to rectify the situation a little quicker. I have reset my router, I am up to date in all versions of my OS across all devices. I have the fastest hookup my ISP offers although it is only testing at 32.28 Mbps this morning (They promised me "up to 100 Mbps" - liars). This happens with both a purchased and rented movie or TV purchases. Basically I am annoyed and frustrated. Calls to Apple have yielded no joy. Beyond updating software and resetting the modem they have no suggestions and refuse to acknowledge the problem exists. Ditto at my local Apple Store. Clearly it does as evidence by the number of posts here. I love using Apple TV (when it works), but at this rate I will move to Roku and Amazon. Do you read these posts Apple? We are frustrated. Fix it please!

Here we go again. I did the update to Apple TV 7.0.3 (6917) and now the internet radio music cuts off after playing a short period of time - like it did a few months ago. And, it buffers and buffers way too often. Months ago, before the last update fiasco, I swore Apple TV was the best thing in TV entertainment. But not now. Really getting tired of this "hit & miss" approach to updates to "my" equipment. I am slowly becoming quite disappointed in Apple solutions. Wonder how long it will take to fix this "ERROR".

Same issue here and the level 6 virtual mall police representative felt that my frustration post was more complaining and felt the need to insult me suggesting this was a simple issue of a localized network problem And that I was not an IT professional... Goes by the screen name VazAndrew... Below is his helpful response prior to getting my post removed through Apple! That's like saying reboot your computer and see if it works And they your not allowed to stress how frustrating a user experience is amongst other users....Totally not helpful and created more aggrevation where my concern was removed and noted it was provided to Apple as suggestion for improvement. I have 3 Apple TVs third generation and happened since upgrading to the 6 software. Problem still not resolved.... Brother in law is Network Engineer has looked and concluded no issues on this end as far as network, bandwidth, or equipment.

Hopefully there is a fix coming soon....

If you were really in IT you would know this is a network issue, which can come at any time without changes done by the user. It is in fact working just fine for the majority. If you wanted to troubleshoot then that is what these user forums are for, Ranting is not permitted.

It's definitely a software issue, my guess is how it wakes up from sleep mode. If my G3 sleeps, connection speed when I wake it up will be slow and buffery. A soft reset brings it back up to expected speed. I have a Harmony Hub and I actually put a ATV reset into the activity start up but I noticed that several third party apps (Netflix, Hulu) will log you out after X number of resets so I stopped to save a bit of time.

My ATV was working fine, then became unusable with slow buffering, halts. Did all the normal stuff: restart, reset etc. Checked LAN, download speed and other devices etc etc etc. After a lot of trouble shooting, I gave up and took the ATV to Apple. They gave me a new one. Problem solved. I am now onto my third ATV and last night it wouldn't reliably play a movie off iTunes. Kept on freezing. Hopeless. Does play Netflix fine. If it is still 'broken' tonight I will take it back to Apple. I believe some ATVs are failing with a fault that Apple probably knows about.

Ive been reading this article since 2013... I still have the same problem I had back then. Buffering is killing me. My download speed is 50 Mbps and still it loads little bits and pieces 5 min movie time, 5 min buffering time. Seriously just fix the hardware, software, come up with a new product whatever! Just don't leave us hanging out there.

I Have the same issues.

it is not isolated to the ATV but all devices connected by LAN.

Netflix stops and buffers at 1hr 27m 44s until it times out and I get the inevitable error messages. Apple sends me to Netflix who sends me to my router manufacturor who in turn sends me to my ISP.

I am in the UK with an 80/20 FTTC speed.

I Have a billion 8800AXL router with an apple time capsule set in bridge mode which provides the wifi for devices such as the iPhone, iPad etc. everything else is set up on a gigabit switch.

All other streaming services are ok, it.s just Netflix!

interestingly, I can cast Netflix to my Chromecast from my phone and the buffering issue rarely occurs.

i Have tried all the above suggestions and am at the point of cancelling Netflix!

RIck.

Agree completely. My Apple TV device was purchased less than a week ago. I'm debating on returning it while I wait 36 hours for my movie rental I purchased to buffer. This of course is after I moved the ATV away from metal, unplugged it for 60 seconds, restarted my router, and held my tongue at a 45 degree angle between my teeth. All I have to say is that I have a Roku in the bedroom that has NEVER FAILED or required 36 hours to download. Good thing that device is just as portable as the ATV and that I saved the receipt. Looks like I'll be moving it back to the living room. Do you read these posts at all, Apple?!?!

Sep 11, 2015 11:42 AM in response to Stryker3k

Help - does anyone from Apple look at these posts? Why does no one from Apple respond to any of these pleas for help from loyal customers? This issue has been going on since 2013 and now my Apple TV is doing the exact same thing. Freezing, buffering, cannot watch Netflix or HBO for more than 1 minute. Completely useless black box on my shelf. Will not even think about purchasing the new Apple TV they announced this week, what a joke. One of the most useless and unreliable Apple products out there, if this was happening with the iPhone they would be all over it.....well perhaps not. I just don't think Apple cares about customers anymore.
