FTP Issues - AirPort Extreme 802.11 AC

Starting a few weeks ago, I have not been able to connect to any of my outbound FTP servers from any device on my AirPort network. I have verified with my ISP, Comcast that they are not blocking port 21 now. I can access these servers perfectly fine on any other network. The Extreme has software version 7.7.1, my cable modem is the Motorola SB6141 and I am using FileZilla on Windows 8. Help would be greatly appreciated.

There are severe FTP issues with the AE.. the last couple of versions of the Gen1-5 firmware as well as the Gen 6.. See this thread.

I think will condemn you to replacement of the AC by a router that actually conforms to standards.

SFTP might work.. see this thread.

I spoke with Apple Support and they blamed the issue on that AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows (the latest version), dosen't fully support the AC model so they had me reset the AirPort to factory default settings and re set it up using my iPad. FTP worked after that for 15 minutes and then just stopped. I need to use regular FTP so SFTP is out of the question. I do have port 21 forwarded to allow my internal FTP server to be accessed from the outside but that has been there for over a year. Is replacement with a different router really the only option? I've spent 400 on Apple AirPorts over time and feel like Apple should fix this issue, considering how even the cheapest routers support FTP and it is a well used protocol.

Your experience tells you Apple have no idea what they are doing.

1. They have not released an update to windows for ages.. even with Win8 now out for more than a year.

2. Apple do not use FTP.. FTP is not a supported protocol on the TC or AE.. therefore it is out of sight and out of mind. It is also not a secure protocol so to some extent they are justified.

3. They provide one method of remote access which is propriety.. which requires you to sign into the Apple world. And use iCloud and BTMM ensuring you remain in the Apple camp.

I am sure they will fix it.. when is the problem.. since it is not a protocol Apple needs or uses.. they don't mind and you don't mattter.

Buy a alternative router.. bridge the AE and it can do all your wireless and become a shiny white switch with the ports orientated the wrong way.. at least until the next firmware comes out and you can give that one a try.

It's definitely a problem with the Apple Airport Extreme / Time Capsule, not the ftp client software. I just moved to a new home and replaced my Airport Extreme (the nice new vertical one that cost me a bundle) with the Wifi router supplied by my Comcast ISP.

My Filezilla ftp client software is working again as it once did before I had the Airport Extreme.

My new Comcast Wifi router, like many other non-Apple brands, has a Wifi Protected Setup (WPS) button making it super simple to connect with Wifi enabled printers and other devices. Just push the button and they connect! In the interest of appearance and style over functionality, Apple has again decided not to include important features that others have.

Oh well, I still like my Macs but will stay away from their networking devices.
