Why are Gifs not playing in iMessages?

Not long ago, when I would drag & drop (or copy and paste) a gif into iMessages and send it to another iphone user, it would play normally. However sometime recently this stopped. I've tried sending the gif to my iphone and it doesn't work either, so I know it is iMessage. If I open the gif link on my iphone and save it, then send it, it works. If I save the gif to my Mac, it plays in the sidebar, but not if opened in preview. Preview splits it into frames. This iMessage issue is annoying. I'm running 10.8.4 if it helps.
