External monitor window resize

I have an issue running Thuderbolt to HDMI to an external monitor from my Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7.

OK basically with the lid open on the laptop the external monitor picture doesn't fill the screen properly, with the lid closed it resizes perfectly to fit the monitor.

Any ideas as to why this would happen and how to fix it, I wish to use the Macbook Pro screen as a second monitor and can't at present because of this.

OK, I sorted this for anyone who's interested.

It only happems when display mirroring is on, the rest of the time it's Ok.
