In current iTunes (12.1.1), highlight song you want to move to album. Ctr + I brings up track info. Change album title to right title, make sure artist & all other info matches the right album you want to move it to. Change track number to right playing order. Click ok. Do the same for all songs you want to move to one single album. Hope this helps. Hmmm, anyone else think iTunes should be more user friendly, instead of relying on us customers to help each other out?? 😐

iTunes will group tracks into albums based on the following rules:

  • All tracks have the same Artist value and the same Album value, or
  • All tracks have the same Album Artist value and the same Album value, or
  • All tracks have the same Album value and the "Album is a compilation ..." flag is set.

In the first and third cases Album Artist can be left blank, though can be set if desired. Setting values for the Sort Album, Sort Artist and/or Sort Album fields shouldn't affect grouping into albums, though it is a good idea to have consistent values (which can include blanks) for all tracks. Inconsistent values can result in tracks within a album being ordered incorrectly, even though the grouping is right. Inconsistent settings of the total tracks, disc number and total discs fields can also cause incorrect ordering. There's also evidence that iTunes 12 may, in some circumstances, fail to group albums correctly is one or more of the sorting fields are set to different values.

iTunes 12 also seems to have a lurking bug such that changes to the fields that are used for grouping don't always trigger the code that makes the grouping happen. If it appears that all the rules are satisfied and an album still won't group correctly, the following "trick" may force the grouping to be correct:

  • select all the tracks that should be grouped as a single album
  • right-click > Get Info
  • on the Details tab, edit the Album value to put a "dummy" character at the start of the name - e.g., if the correct/intended value is "Pink Floyd" change it to "xPink Floyd"
  • click OK - in most cases the album will now be grouped correctly
  • now repeat the editing process to reset the Album field to the correct value - the grouping should now be persistent

There's a similar oddity/workaround where an album can be "forced" to group correctly by setting and then unsetting the "Album is a compilation ..." flag.

Note that the third rule above also affects where iTunes stores media files, if configured to organize your library. The general rule tis that files will be stored in iTunes Media\Music\artist_name\album_title, where artist_name is the value in the Album Artist field if set, otherwise that of the Artist field. If the "Album is a compilation ..." flag is set, however, files will be stored in iTunes Media\Music\Compilations\album_title.

Ooops ... missed the window to edit a couple of typos 😟. The second sentence of the text after the first bullet list should be "Setting values for the Sort Album, Sort Artist and/or Sort Album Artist ...", and a more realistic example in the second bullet list would be to change "Dark Side of the Moon" to "xDark Side of the Moon".

"when you add an album, go to get info (on the album not the songs) and make sure the box that says (Album is a compilation of songs by various artists) is unselected"

That will work - and only work - if:

  • the values of Album and Album Artist are the same for all tracks, or
  • the values of Album and Artist are the same for all tracks

Unless you're using an older model of iPod that doesn't recognize the Album Artist tag, there's no need to use the "Album is a compilation ..." flag. Setting a common value for Album Artist is equivalent (albeit with some variations in how iTunes will sort albums and where it will store media).

Yes, I know ... it does seem that making any updates to the code on "legacy" iPods is very, very low on Apple's priorities (if its even there at all). I can't believe, for example, that it would require a major effort to make audiobook handling universal - rather, than as on my various nanos (2nd, 3rd and 7th gens) have subtle but irritating differences between them 😟.
