Hi all -
I am trying to adjust the size of a PDF and a JPEG in Preview, as I have done so many times. However, the "Adjust Size" option is now grayed out. Does anyone know of a fix for this? Or something I might have done that caused the problem?

I don't know what to make of it. Safe Boot takes almost everything out of your User folder that could cause the problem. The only next step would be to boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
First choose Disk Utility > Repair Disk from the menu. Then Choose "Re-install OS X". This will be an "install in place" and shouldn't touch anything in your User folder, or any of your own files. But it's always adviseable to have a backup.

That may be, but you have a new plist now so it should be back to default.
Let's try it this way...
Try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+).
You can't adjust the size of any PDF in Preview, so that's not an issue. As for the JPEG, are you unable to adjust the size of only one, or of all?

Ran the EtreCheck - and thank you for that suggestion! I have copied the report below - is there anything there that you can tell might obviously be the problem?
Also, I did do a software update yesterday - perhaps there was a little glitch of some sort?

Well, I did that, and unfortunately, that didn't do it either...
I did go ahead and look under the Users & Groups, just to see what was in there, and I've got my normal Administrator account and a Guest account, which I've never used.

Holy cow! I seriously don't know what just happened, but I rebooted in safe mode again, and it worked. Then, I shut down again and rebooted, and suddenly, it's still working. Very strange, but thank you for all of your time and awesome help. It is really appreciated - I was doing something "mission critical" for my site, and not being ablet o resize my JPEGs properly was driving me nuts (and causing problems on upload).

Quit Preview.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". Then go to Containers/com.apple.Preview/Container plist and move that file to the Desktop.
Relaunch Preview and test.

Okay, I moved that exact file to my desktop, but, upon re-opening Preview, no love. "Adjust Size" is still grayed out. Anything else I can try?

A funky pref file seemed like the most likely culprit. Maybe a Login Item...
Try running EtreCheck and see what turns up.
