    You can't

You say you have a PowerPC iMac so it is not possible for that iMac to run Lion

You cannot upgrade a PPC to Snow Leopard or beyond because they require an Intel Mac. 10.5.8 is the end of the road for your computer as far as OS X is concerned.

You might think about buying a new computer.

    Hi Marlene,

Let's make sure about your iMac; lots of people with newer iMacs are tricked into this forum due to osteocephalic labeling an average use cannot be expected to translate.

Please do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu:

    about this Mac command.png

    You will get this window:

    About_this_Mac_PPC.png

If the line I highlighted with the lower arrow includes "PowerPC," you can run no higher that Mac OS10.5.8 "Leopard"

If that line includes the word "Intel," you computer can run at least OS 10.6 "Snow Leopard." Depending on your exact model, you may be able to run Lion or Mountain Lion.

Let's figure out if you have the very limiting PowerPC processor. If you don't, we'll have you give us more info on your iMac model that will tell us if it can go to 10.6 or higher.

Oh, and a hearty "Welcome!" to ASC!

Since you have told us you have an Intel iMac, it will helps us all if you gave us more specific info about your iMac.

To find out info about your system, click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar.

    A drop down menu appears.

    Click About this Mac.

A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.

Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.

Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply. This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.

And you have options! Let's pin down your exact Intel iMac.

Click your Apple menu again and, this time, press the OPTION key. That will change "About this Mac" to "System Profiler"--launch it.

The resulting screen will look like this:

    SysProf_main_forASC.png

Please post the code in the line I've indicated with the arrow. Yours will be "iMacX,X" instead of "MacbookPro" in the example. Also tell us your screen size and how much RAM ("Memory") the same screen says is present. Please do NOT post you serial number.

With those tidbits we can make some very accurate upgrade recommendations.

I hope I'm being literate tonight. I had my left knee replaced this morning and am typing from my hospital room. Gotta love wireless!

Edit: Sorry Michel--the nurses' aide came in to take my vitals while I was composing and I did not see you had answered until I posted.
