I am hoping that once i download the quicktime mpeg-2
playback plugin that imovie will be able to import
this format? can anyone help?
Quick answer - NO!
The extra component the (MPEG-2) will ONLY let you see and
playback those JVC .MOD files.
By (renaming) the .MOD files so that they read with either .MP2 or MPG,
Quicktime does playback your files.... but -- I CAUTION -- without any sound. Don't fear, the sound is there though -- these renamed MOD files are really MPEG2 MUXED files. So both audio and video are one track.
HOWEVER, after renaming them (even without the MPEG-2 component and QTPRO) iMovie is clever enough to do the MPG2 to DV conversion on it's own.You will find a saved DV stream of your (renamed MOD file) within your iMovie project as .DV file. Ready to edit -- Again -- without sound.
I got quite frustrated with this myself... but my co-worker was the true hero in all this. He tried his VisualHub program that he recently bought... and we found that the renamed MP2 file was converted to a USABLE .DV stream with SOUND for iMovie and QT playback... again without the MPEG-2 component.
Hurray - but that would be a extra expense to me.
STRANGLY, Toast 6 took the these JVC renamed files and let me successfully made a DVD that was perfect, that is, with sound and all.
So, I next used the Handbrake which made a MP4 file that I found imports into iMovie well enough for my purposes
I liked the idea of seeing my MOD files in QT even without sound... it who give me an idea of what I have before doing anything.
I am considering getting the VisualHub and Apples MPEG-2 component.
hope that helps you.
