Opening Keynote for Powerpoint Presentation on a non-mac computer?

My friends have tried to use keynote powerpoints on computers that aren't Macs, and say it didn't work, while .ppt files do. I bought iWorks and don't want to buy Microsoft Office, so if I wanted to show a presentation that I made on Keynote, would selecting file>export>PPT on a keynote presentation do the job?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8), This also involves an Ipod ios 6.1

Exporting your KeyNote presentation to PowerPoint will get you started, but you then have to go into the created PPT file and clean up most of your slides. Make sure you have the same fonts on your PC, too. Also, when you Export to PPT, you will notice a proliferation of PPT master slides. KeyNote exports a master for each different slide layout. You may have to go through your PPT masters and delete a lot of the junk out of the file.
