Red dot missing from SMS icon

I keep missing SMS text messages because the red dot does not appear and alert me that one has arrived. Any ideas?

If you have the message app open, you won't get the alert. IF you have the message app close you'll get the alert and red icon.

Check Settings > Notifications > Messages. Make sure Badge App Icon is On.
