iphone 4s had 10gb of "other data". I followed instructions from other posts. I backed up to mac then restored as new. Now it will not restore old contacts, texts, photos, etc. Help??

My iphone 4s had 10gb of"other data". This appears to be a common issue. I follow posted instructions from other users on this forum. I plugged into my mac, I backed it up, and then I restored as new. Once this was done, I obviously lost all of my texts, photos, contacts, etc. I have attempted many times to restore from the back up and I continue to get an error message. It states that it is unable to restore from back up as there is not enough storage space on my iphone. After the restore from new, my iphone shows that there is over 12gb of free space. So I know that it cleaned up the "other data",but now I cannot find everything I lost. What am I doing wrong, or what did I do wrong? Thank you for your assistance with this frustrating issue.
