The easiest way to  identify iPads is by camera or connection type

If it doesn't have a camera its an iPad 1.

If it has a camera and a wide connection port at the bottom its an iPad 2 or 3.

If its a tiny connection port then its an iPad 4.

To identify between an iPad 2 and 3 you will need the model number which can be found in Settings->General->About->Model

You can then google that number to identify the iPad.

The model number I have under settings general looks nothing like the model numbers listed on the referenced web site. MC916LL/A

    You have a 64GB black iPad 2.

The Model number in settings about, is different to the Generic Model number that can be found on the back of the iPad and that corresponds to the reference website numbers.

The Model number in Settings->General->About tells you color, storage space and country where its sold.

The more generic number just tells you what generation it is, and wether its wifi + cellular or wifi only.

Also 2 update my description above:

If its a tiny connection port then its an iPad 4 or an Air.
