FTP access through finder

Okay - so I understand that the FTP access through the finder is read only and am using cyberduck. Two questions though - I use FTP to update a website - life would be so much easier if I could just save to the website directly - is there a way to make FTP read/write directly through the finder?

The second is - does anybody know the reasoning as to why apple made this read only by default?

Thanks

Mike

As for the read/write directly:
From what i understand about FTP, the protocol will not let you "mount" the server as a volume. That is to say you can GET, DELETE, or PUT and that is pretty much it. Accessing a file and keeping it open for editing is not an option because it is unsupported by the protocol (not the finder).
This means you still need to GET the file, edit, then PUT the new copy back up.

As for the read only default:
Kind of *****, but it what it is. You either have to go Terminal or third party. Apple has mentioned this in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107415
They fail to mention a reason why. I know that FTP is less than secure, maybe it has to do with limiting the remote servers ability to write to your home folder.

hope this helps!
