iOS7 update - it reset all my emails to unread

I updated my iPhone 5 to iOS7 today but it reset all my emails in the Mail app to being unread, even the ones not downloaded to my phone. How can I change it so it only thinks new emails are unread? I know about the 'Mark All' then 'Read', but that only does a handful of messages at a time. It thinks all the emails in my account - thousands of them - are unread. Since the phone only fetches a certain number of emails at a time, it would take forever to fetch them all to my phone, and I don't want all of them locally anyway.

Thanks!

Confirmed - it's a bug. OS just came out today and they are working on it. My suggestion is to just deal with it for now, or turn off badge. Otherwise you will kill hours searching for a solution.

Restore to iOS 6 or live with it for now. There is no "mark as unread", count to 3, power phone off, then spin around in 3 circles, lift one leg, then turn the phone back on and it works... solution.

Should be fixed soon, just keep reporting it to Apple.

Correct. As a developer I can't discuss what happened during the beta because of the NDA, but this is clearly a bug, report it if you can be bothered and don't waste your time on silly solutions that won't help.

The only non-silly solution would be to use a non-iPhone to see if you can reset your messages to unread. For example, use the Hotmail web interface, GMail, the Mail app or something like Thunderbird. That might at least restore sanity to your mail account, though there's a chance that iOS 7 would then just reset things back to unread again.

This issue seemed to have now been resolved on my third party email. I kept scrolling down on the email, and when a new batch of emails downloaded, I did the 'mark all as read'.

The new email indicator seemed to be reading the emails that haven't downloaded yet, which is why you can't see them. However, it wasn't consistent, as I have a thousand or so emails on that email account, but it was only saying 420 unread.

Either way, the issue has now cleared and i don't have any 'unread' notifications.

Good luck!

For those of you having problems with unread emails on your hotmail accounts, hotmail has used POP for emails in the past and this does not sync if messages are read or not. This is an old standard and shouldn't be used any more.

You can now use Exchange or IMAP for hotmail and this should mark them as read and stop this from happening again. Add a new mail account on your iPhone, and select Exchange instead of Hotmail/Outlook.com and sign in with your hotmail details. You may need to change the Mail Days to Sync options after you set it up to get all your emails back. Your hotmail account may also have put all your emails into a POP folder. Sign in to hotmail on a computer and move all the emails in that folder back into your inbox.

If exchange does not work, you can try using IMAP, the details are

  • Incoming Mail Server IMAP

    Server: imap-mail.outlook.com

  • Outgoing Mail Server SMTP

    Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com

To add the account, select other when you add a new mail account, and put in a nonsense email address for example "blah@blah.com" to avoid the mail app automatically setting up the account for you.

Then select IMAP and input the proper details. your username is your hotmail address.

I was seeing this on both my hotmail (4000 unread) and Gmail (7000 unread) accounts for a grand total of 11,000 unread messages that wouldn't go away.

But I fixed by deleting my hotmail account, which was historically set up using POP, and then re-adding it using the 'outlook.com' pre-set configuration (outlook.com and hotmail.com are the same thing), which doesn't use POP. Oddly, this not only fixed the problem for my hotmail account, it also sorted it out for my Gmail account, even though I haven't touched that one.

Delete the entire hotmail account from your iPhone. i.e. go into Settings>Email> Hotmail >Delete Account

Once it's totally gone, go back into Settings>Email and click 'Add Account', then in the selection that comes up choose 'outlook.com'. Put in all your normal details and the account should come back as before, but the badge will now work.

Did this hours ago on mine and the problem has stayed gone.
